金质，有盖，盖上、瓶沿、肩部及圈中均刻有如意纹装饰，口沿、盖和钮用宝石镶嵌，腹部四周刻“十相自在”，瓶中有如意头象牙签五支。藏传佛教格鲁派活佛是通过“转世”制度相继承的，但转世灵童的确定往往受到人为的影响。为改变大活佛转世为藏蒙贵族所操纵的积弊，清延于乾隆五十七年（１７９２年）八月特颁发金瓶一对，分别贮于北京雍和宫和拉萨大昭寺，并规定了确定转世灵童的具体程序，以后成为定制，沿用至今。此项制度称为“金瓶掣签”。
This urn is gold,Its lid,rim,shoulder and ring foot are carved with Ruyi pattern．Its mouth rim,lid and Knob are inlaid with gems．On the lower belly there is a pattern of vNam bcu dbang ldan．Inside the urn stand five ivory lots with Ruyiheads．The "reincarnation"system was long kept as a tradition of the dGe-lugs Sec of Tibetan Buddhism．However,this practice had sometimes been malfunctioned due to outside interferencm．In order to avoid the malpratice that the Tibetan and Mongolian aristocricts manipulated the method,the imperial government granted two gold urns in the ５７th year of Qianlong reign（１７９２）．One was preserved in the Yonghe Lamasery（Palace of Harmony） in Beijing and used to confirm the reincarnated soul boys of Mongolian grand lamas． The other, called"Bum-pa",was sent to Tibet． At the same time,the confirmation procedures were stipulated and have become law ever since．This system is called"drawing lots from the gold urn"．
